We may need to buy this prep NOW

Just came across some info about a new tobacco tax. This will be on the loose stuff, such as the one pound bags. Does anyone know if there is any truth to this. The laws will apparently be put in place as soon as April 1st.

If you are thinking about saving up for SHTF, it's not a bad plan. How long will this stuff keep?

i'm not a smoker, but i have 32 cartons of smokes prepped for bartering. if you're a smoker, i'd start stacking up, if for nothing else, the huge taxes coming.

BASTARDS```````Jumping the tax from a buck a pound to $24 a pound This stinks. I can grow my own here in Michigan, but it tastes like those dud canadian "Players". Maybe I'll order 50 pounds now from Lil Brown.

Vacuum seal it, it should last a long time.
I know chewing tobacco and pipe tobacco in those foil pouches
lasts a long time.
But cigs in a pack will be stale tasting in 6 months.

You should just get the seeds much cheaper and no chemicals

Paid a visit to my local smoke shop this afternoon. The owner is typically very low-key and professional. He has a big store, lots of inventory, expensive pipes, knives...

Anyway, went in to stock up on butane and asked him about this. He said retailers like him have been fighting it for 18 months. Says the federal tax is just the start because it opens the door for additional state taxes. In his estimation, a price increase of $1 per cigar is coming 4.1.09. Loose tobacco up $2 per pound.

He was also talking about a "floor tax" meaning he needs to pay the difference in price between inventory and the new increase price. Says it's viewed as "profit" even if not sold.

Long story short, he was pissed. Ended the conversation with "this country needs a revolution."

I'll be stacking my favorite smokes the next two months....

Crap.

I don't smoke cigarettes. (Just an occasional cigar.)

So for barter would it be a good idea to stock bulk tobacco and paper wrappers?

What would be the best way to store loose, RYO tobacco? Sealed in vacuum bags, freezer, both? If this is for real, I'm gonna make a big buy on both cig tubes and tobacco soon.

Leaning toward this guy's solution just bigger containers. The stuff I have now is in ziplock bags and the smell gets thru...pipe tobacco that is...

Just when I thought I had all the garden seeds I need for the year this gets posted.... Time to buy tobacco seeds and try to grow it in Indiana; if it does not go well outside it will inside.

I've placed many orders with them. They are great to deal with. I may have to load up on some myself. Lucky for me I've mostly been using dry (nasal) snuff lately. That stuff stores pretty well and takes up little space.

Called Lil' Brown[1-800-706-2480]today and this is true. The tax on loose RYO is going from a buck a pound to 23 something a pound if TPTB get their way.

If you want to store tobacco (or fragrant spices) for the long term, I'd recommend using 7 mil thick mylar bags, vacuum packed, with an oxygen absorber added. I'm not a smoker, but had a good bit of spices stashed away in the original nylon/polyethylene laminated bag (the same sort of plastic used in FoodSaver bags). You could easily smell the spices through the plastic bags. Same problem with a bag of 3-4 dozen vanilla beans I bought from another source.

Vacuum heat seal them in the 7 mil mylar bags, no more smell.

Thanks for the tip! These 7 mil mylar bags you mention, are they the same thickness as what is used for packaging food in 5 gallon pails? I bought some when I put up a bunch of rice, beans, etc in 5 gallon pails, but forget where I bought them from!

I don't know where you got your pail liners. I've only used the ones from Sorbent Systems, which are 4 or 4.5 mils thick.

The 7 mil thick mylar pouches I'm talking about come from the ldscatalog.com website. Go to www.ldscatalog.com, click on Welfare Services, then on Home Storage. You'll see all the stuff that's available, ranging from cases of #10 cans of wheat/rice/pinto beans, heat sealers, oxygen absorbers, and also the Dry-Pack (7 mil mylar) pouches. FREE SHIPPING.

These are MUCH thicker/stiffer than the 1 gal and 5 gal sized mylar pouches I got from Sorbent Systems.

I think the biggest thing would be to use impermeable pouches (to prevent evaporation of all the flavors). IF you've also got oxygen absorbers, throw those in too for better long term storage.

Enjoy!
